   Frequently Asked Questions

Here you will find answers to the most Frequently Asked Questions about 10ticks

Register

Q: Does it cost anything to register as a user?
A: No!!

Q: Why should I register?
A: You get to see stuff others don't. There are extra pages just for you. You can download Wallwords and documents from our shareware section. Also you can use the discussion room, t2t, to chat to other teachers. Also you need to register to download our FREE pack of worksheets.

Q: What do I need to register?
A: Quite simply a valid e-mail address!! As soon as you register (within a minute!) you will be sent, by e-mail, your login details. If you don't get this e-mail the most likely reason is you have mis-spelled your e-mail address!! Try again!

Q: Should I register as a School or a Teacher?
A: The school account will only let you buy material for the school, but apart from that you get the same extra pages.

Q: If I register will you send me loads of e-mail junk?
A: We comply with the data protection act. Simply - you're in charge! When you register you decide if you want our newsletter. It isn't a big decision as when you login to your user area you can turn on or off this option at any time. If you put in your date of birth and allow us to send you newsletters then we can send you a birthday card.

Q: Can I close my account when I want?
A: You control everything from your user area. You can delete your account, edit details and change your school!! You can even put in your friends e-mail addresses and dates of birth and we send them a birthday card from you!! How's that for convenience!!

Q. What happens to my account if I don't use it ?
A. The website records the last date you logged in to your account. If your account has not been used for two years then the account is automatically deleted. When this happens all your details are lost, your high scores, test scores and other user details. This is an automated process and this information can not be retrieved at a later date. The moral ? Login regularly!!

Q. Some how I have deleted my account and I want it back! What should I do?
A. E-mail us as soon as you can, we may be able to save it - but no promises!!

Curriculum

Q. Will this deliver the Year 7/8/9 framework ?
A. Yes. It has been written to respond to the new National Curriculum guidelines. All the topics are covered in the worksheets. Mental work is a key element within the framework, and this is something that can not be delivered by the worksheets alone (or textbooks for that matter). There is a major element of number work within the worksheets that can aid the delivery of the mental work.

Q. Will this deliver the GCSE Intermediate syllabus 2003?
A. Yes. The level 7/8 packs are designed to sit on the level 5 and 6 packs. Together this provides thorough coverage of the Intermediate GCSE syllabus for 2003. New topics at this level include Circle Properties, Interquartile Range, Box Plots, Time Series graphs and Moving Averages.

Q. Will this deliver the GCSE Higher syllabus 2003?
A. Yes. The level 9/10 packs are designed to sit on the level 7/8 packs. Together this provides thorough coverage of the Higher GCSE syllabus for 2003.

Q. Where do I find the National Curriculum level for each sheet?
A. In the bottom left hand corner you will see the level the worksheet is aimed at. This is a guide only. As with any good scheme of work the worksheets spiral from the level below to the level above. Refer to the National Curriculum Guidelines for the definitive level of any particular worksheet.

Q. Why is every sheet referenced to the National Curriculum ?
A. They have been referenced for quick ease of use by the teacher. This is particularly useful if a member of staff is ill and the HoD needs a sheet at a particular level quickly.

Q. Who has written this ?
A. It has been written by teachers for teachers. The philosophy being that it is low on explanation (that is the job of the classroom teacher) and therefore gives more room for graduated questioning in depth.

Q. Do you expect every child to answer all the questions ?
A. This is just a resource for the teacher. The pedagogy used in the classroom belongs to the teacher. How they use that resource depends on them. Some classes may just attempt odd numbered questions, those that need to build more concrete foundations may attempt more.

Q. Why are the materials so cheap?
A. As teachers, we are trying to produce materials that are of use to the profession - materials that will enhance and enrich the curriculum.„ This is a gap that we feel has not been filled and we have the expertise to fill. By selling over the internet we therefore reduce our overheads and pass these savings on to you.

Q. Can we photocopy them for ever ?
A. Once they have been bought by a school/institution, that school has the right to use them in their school/institution forever. No repeat fees for textbooks that are lost etc. We feel this can be a massive long term saving to your school.

Q. We are a teacher training institution, how can we use them ?
A. If you are a teacher training institution your students have the right to use them in any school they are in whilst on teacher training practice under your guidance. After they leave your institution they cannot use them unless the school they are employed in has bought them. The school the student previously trained at has no right to use them with any other member of staff during or after your student's visit, unless the school has purchased the packs. This should be made clear to the students so that they don't breach copyright.

Q. As a Scottish school is this any use to us?
A. Yes. The materials are rich in content and have thorough coverage of the topics you have to teach. They are referenced to the English National Curriculum, but as a guide Level 4 and Level 5 are roughly equivalent to the age range 9 - 12 years old.

Q. How do I buy from overseas?
A. Order through the shopping cart. The only difference is that you will have to pay postage and packaging at the appropriate rate. See FAQ in the "buy now" page. Some local taxes may apply to imported goods. All payments are by credit card.

Q. My school wants to post an order, what is the address?
A. Fisher Educational.
Bolton Enterprise centre,
Washington Street,
Bolton,
BL3 5EY

Troubleshooting

Q. When I print out the text appears smaller than it should.
A. When printing out deselect (no tick) the "Fit to Page" box from the printer option.

Q. When measuring lines they appear to be slightly different from the answers.
A. The Acrobat program has the exact measurement. Some printer set ups may vary and hence the measurements may vary by a millimetre. In this case either try different printer settings, or work out answers for your set of work sheets.

Q. I can't see the footer with the level descriptions.
A. If you haven't installed your latest printer driver for your machine this can happen. Contact the printer manufacturer for the latest printer drivers. Alternatively you may need to alter your printer/printer driver settings, see your manual for details.

Q. When I print out I have black blobs on the worksheets. How do I stop this ?
A. These black blobs are the pictures on the worksheets. This is caused by using an old version of Acrobat Reader. Install and use Acrobat Reader version 5.0 or higher.

Q. I click on the links but nothing happens.. How do I stop this ?
A. It may be that you have a 'pop-up killer' installed. Quite often the firewall you are using will have an ability to stop pop-ups. You need to disable this function as the site uses pop-ups occasionally.

Q. Can I post an advert straight away?
A. You must be registered with us at the website. If you are already registered login and post an advert! If not register here.

Q. Is the form easy to fill in?
A. We have given guidance to each section as you go through it. This is so that parents have a uniform set of adverts to view. This is easier for them to search and compare tutors and quick and easy for you to fill in.

Q. How will potential clients search for me?
A. They will search the three criteria in our directories. You select the information for the directories when submitting your advert.

Subject (Up to three subjects can be offered)
County (This the geographical location you will cover. Up to three counties can be inputted)
LEA (Again geographical areas that you can offer).

Q. Doesn't this restrict the information I can give out?
A. This is only part of the information you submit. You offer more details in the on-line forms. You can specify the exact details of times, places, Key Stages you can offer etc.

Q. How will Parents contact me?
A. When you fill in your advert you will have options that show how you wish to be contacted. You can use any combination of these. You control this through your User Area and they can be amended by you at any time. The options are - show address, show phone number, show e-mail address, fill in form. By opting fill in form only you won't give out any private details, the draw back is that if any details filled in on the form are incorrect you have no way of contacting that person.

Note: Only personal information you allow will be given out on the website.

Q. Do I have to keep visiting the website to get my contacts?
A. All contacts made through the form or e-mail options are e-mailed to you. Potential clients may contact you through your phone number if this is one of your preferred contact options.

Q. Do I get any other contact method for clients?
A. When you first post your advert we will e-mail you with any good matches to your advert already on our website. If, at a later date, a parent signs up for an advert and they match the details you are offering an e-mail alert will be sent to you. This will happen whether or not your advert is switched on. This way you may find time to potentially squeeze another client into your time schedule.

Q. How long before my advert will appear?
A. Have you filled in the online forms, proof read it and submitted it ? If so it will appear straight away!!!

Q. What happens if I want to change my advert?
A. You control your advert through the User Area. You an access this area at anytime and change any details you wish. You are in full control of your advert. For example if you are booked up on one evening then you can delete this time from your advert.

Q. What happens if I'm fully booked up?
A. Again your User Area will control the advert. From this area you can switch off 'Show Advert' and the advert will not appear on the website. The advert will still be in your User Area ready for you to Switch On/Edit at a later date. You can also delete you advert from the database if you wish.

Q. I've searched and can't find anyone?
A. If advertisers have switched off their adverts we don't show them. For example, if you look under the County directory and can't see a County you are looking for, then there are no adverts under that County. This is to save time searching.

Important: It could be that the adverts are switched off for that area/subject - but by putting in your own advert any good match that is switched off will be alerted to your advert by e-mail.

Q. Will the advert run for ever?
A. After 11 months we will contact you by e-mail and ask if you wish to keep the advert running, if you do just follow the instructions. The reason we will do this is to enable us to clear out old data from our database. Old data just fills up server space and makes the website less efficient to run.

Q. Do we inform you if we get a client?
A. No. The only thing you may need to do is to amend your advert appropriately.

Q. Why should we advertise with you?
A. We are a unique website in the fact that our regular visitors make up of thousands of teachers and parents. Hence we can bring these two bodies of people together for mutual benefit. What's more it is FREE, national and you can be very specific in your requirements.

Q. Who is responsible if things go wrong?
A. Any contract or agreement you make is between you and the client. Fisher Educational accepts no liability for losses or problems which arise out of your use of our service. You are responsible for ensuring the accuracy of your advertisement.

Q. Who are 10ticks.co.uk?
A. Our company name is Fisher Educational Ltd, Company Registration No 3668099, and we trade over the internet under the domain name 10ticks.co.uk. We are made up of teachers, admin staff and programmers. Our contact details are on the home page.

Q. Do you charge the tutors/parents a commission fee?
A. No.

Q. Are you a home tuition agency?
A. No. We are just advertising platform. We work in a similar way to a newspapers' classified advertisements column.

Q. Will every one contacting me be honest?
A. No. there are various scams that go round and if any come to our attention we will e-mail you. A typical scam would be:

Tutors will receive an email from a "parent" overseas saying they want tuition for their child and will send the tutor a cheque.
He does not want any tuition for his non-existent child, he just wants to steal your money. At some point he will ask for a refund of some or all of the balance.

By presenting the conterfeit cheque at a bank you yourself will be liable for the attention of law enforcement authorities in your country on fraud charges. Therefore if you choose to present it, ensure that you tell the bank of your suspicions and ask them to verify its authenticity. Unfortunately the counterfeiting is so good that the teller will likely tell you that it is a good cheque, and clear the funds in your account.

So in reality, even though your bank may pay you for the cheque, or even tell you it has "cleared," they will discover in a matter of days or weeks that the cheque is false, and come back after YOU for the entire amount. This is a common scam which has cost people millions of dollars.

The bank will then deny any liability in the matter, inform the police and then demand repayment.

Common sense should tell you that if it looks too good to be true it probably is too good to be true.

...and finally some advice.

You would be well advised to have a copy of testimonials to show potential clients, quote a referee if you wish. Tutors are urged to protect themselves against malicious allegations. It may be better to work in the client's own home, within sight and sound of parents.
