Pages 3/4. Number Pyramids.

The theme of pyramid addition and subtraction will appear in later levels. Here you can practice the style of the questions. To find a brick number add the two bricks below it. As the sheet progresses the pyramids get larger and subtraction has to be used to find some of the missing bricks.

Pages 5/6. Magic Squares.

Its an old idea, but a favourite!

Pages 7/8. Addon-agons.

Various polygons that use addition and subtraction to solve them. Questions 25 to 32 require some trial and improvement techniques to solve them.

Pages 9/10. Addition and Subtraction 1/2.

Wordsearch problems. Do the sum, write the answer in words and then find it in the grid. Good to check the spellings of numbers. The numbers used in both sheets are the number range 1 to 36. Pupils may need the spelling sheet or put reminders of the spellings on the board.

Pages 11/12. Star Maze (Add).

Puzzles. Find the route across the star that adds to the correct total. There may be more than one correct answer. These make ideal wall display material. Get pupils to make and decorate their own.

Pages 13/14. Star Maze (Take Away).

As above.

Page 15. Four in a Line-Take Away 1.

This is an introduction to the 'four in a line'. The pupils should be confident about the maths skills involved - subtraction of two numbers enerated from a die. This enables them to concentrate on the rules of the game and to start thinking of strategies that can be employed.

Page 16. Four in a Line-Addition.

Game of addition. Number bonds up to 12.

Page 17. Four in a Line-Take Away 2.

Game of subtraction. Pick two numbers from the box and subtract the smaller from the larger. The numbers used are 3, 5, 8, 12, 17, 23, 30, 38 and 47.

Page 18. Hex.

A game of addition/subtraction. Pick two numbers from the box and either add or subtract them. The numbers are 2, 5, 7, 9, 14, 20, 27 and 35. Cover the answer on the grid with a counter and make a route across the board to win.

Page 19/20. Star Wars (Add/Take Away).

Games of addition and subtraction. Players move a single counter around the board keeping a running total. The person to go above the given number loses. For pupils who finish early change the totals.

Pages 21/22. Wheels.

Another form of practice for addition and subtraction. Each wheel concentrates on a different number bond.

Page 23. Hit 35.

A game of 'shove penny'. Pupils keep a running total and the first to 35 wins. Easy to adapt. Change the target number, or work down from a target number to nought.

Pages 24/25. Some Products 1/2 !!

A mental exercise finding products (times) and sums (add) of given numbers. In the second worksheet the sum and product are given and pupils have to find the two starting numbers.

Pages 26. Hex- a Multiplying Game.

The game of hex adapted for multiplication. Pupils should know the 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10 timestables.

Pages 27/28. Word Search 1/2 (Times and Divide).

Work out the answers, write them as words and find them in the grid. Pupils may need the spelling sheet or put reminders of key spellings on the board.

Pages 29/30. Multiplagons.

Similar to the addon-agons but with multiplication and division based around the 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10 timestables.

Pages 31/32. Multiplication Grids.

Multiplying numbers involving a grid. Progression is made line by line. Division is necessary to complete the later grids.

Pages 33/34. Amazing Odd Numbers/Amazing Even Numbers.

Follow the odd and even numbers through the mazes to find the treasure! Colour in the odd and even numbers to find all the pathways.

Pages 35-38. Amazing Number Three/Four/Five/Ten.

Follow the timestables through the mazes to find the treasure! Colour in the timestables to find all the pathways.

Pages 39-42. Balloon Race 1/2/3/4.

Game involving multiples. Two dice need to be used. It is suggested that if dice numbered 0, 1, 2,3, 4, and 5 are used rather than the traditional dice (or a combination). The reason being that in the first game common multiples of 5 and 2 are the 10 timestable, and this cannot be generated from two traditional dice.

Page 3. Addition Number Patterns.

Number bonds to 20. This worksheet uses number pattern to identify the number bonds.

Page 4. Goal.

A game of strategy. Adding numbers up to 10 on any 1 or 2 digit number.

Pages 5/6. Cards (Addition).

Reinforcing number bonds and the opposite nature of add and take away.

Sections B and C focus on how the two parts of an addition can be split into T and U and that these are interchangeable. It would be ideal if pupils could find all 4 solutions to the question. In Section D it shows that subtraction is not interchangeable in this way.

Pages 7/8. Adding Numbers (Partitioning).

Page 7 concentrates on partitioning numbers in to 5 and 'a bit'. Some of the sums may be easier using other techniques and this may need to be explained. For instance with 26 + 9, it may be better solved as 26 + 10 - 1.

Page 8 concentrates on partitioning numbers in to 10 and 'a bit'. Again some of the sums may be easier using other techniques, for instance with 26 + 18, it may be better solved as 26 + 20 - 2.

Pages 9/10. Doubles (Add).

Adding doubles and near doubles.

Pages 11-13. 15 minute Challenges (Add, Take Away, Add and Take Away).

These challenges can be used in a variety of ways. It could be an oral two minute challenge in front of the class, used as a written/oral homework or as the 15 minute challenge. The same challenge can be attempted weekly and scores noted by pupils to see the improvement. The score could be the total correct, or the score to the first incorrect one - the latter to ensure pupils eradicate careless errors.

Page 14. Mental Addition and Subtraction.

More addition and subtraction questions.

Pages 15-20. Addition 1/2/3. Addition Boxes 1/2/3.

By the end of Level 3 pupils should be starting to use column addition and subtraction. These sheets are designed for this purpose, though they could be used for any addition or subtraction (pages 21-26) techniques. The 'Addition (Boxes)' worksheets have parts of the question and answer missing, pupils have to work out the missing numbers to make the calculation correct.

Pages 21-26. Subtraction 1/2/3. Subtraction Boxes 1/2/3.

As above.

Pages 27/28. Rectangles.

Introducing multiplication. Pupils have to colour in rectangles and count squares. These are recorded giving them some of the basic multiplication facts.

Page 29. Rectangles Game.

A game where pupils roll dice and colour in rectangles. This builds on the basic multiplication facts and reinforces some of the addition skills.

Page 30. Multiplication Square.

Pupils have to complete a multiplication square. Parts of the multiplication square are reproduced with numbers missing, pupils have to fill these in.

Pages 31/32. Cards (Multiplication).

This worksheet looks at the reciprocal nature of multiplication and division whilst reinforcing the multiplication tables.

Page 33. Doubles and Halves.

Pages 3/4. Rounding to the Nearest 10/100. 

Use of a number line to round numbers (0-1000) to the nearest 10 and 100. 

Pages 5/6. Sequences. 

Use of 1-100 squares to investigate sequences going forwards and backwards in steps of 2, 3, 4 and 5. 

Pages 7-10. Solitaire. 

A traditional game of solitaire played with counters. When pupils can't move any more counters, pupils calculate a score by looking under the counters left on the board and totalling them. There are four starting positions for counters, traditional, diamond, arrow and double arrow. On the latter there are add and take away numbers for calculating the end score. 

Pages 11/12. Stay or Go (Add/Take Away). 

A 'Snakes and Ladders' style of board game. Move forward the number rolled on the die, calculate the sum on the square, if calculated correctly stay, if not go back 6 places. Each board game concentrates on one aspect of number work.

Understand that some shapes have more than 1 line and some have no line of symmetry. It is an interesting exercise to see how many different ways you can write the letters of the alphabet so they have different numbers of line symmetry. X for instance could have 2 or 4. Q could have 0 or 1 (draw the tail pointing to the centre of the circle). This could be an extension activity. 

Pages 35/36. Reflection. 

Exercises to draw the reflected shape in 1 or 2 lines of reflection. 

Pages 37/38. Right Angles. 

Identify right angles and say whether the angles are more/less than a right angle. 

Pages 39/40. Compass Points/Tally Charts.
