Our New Video Upload!
|
Here at 10ticks, we like to engage teachers and students in our work. We have recently developed a brand new feature on our website to allow you as a teacher to upload video to our site. You can upload videos of your own explanations and lessons on maths topics, and tag them for your students to view. Other members will also be able to benefit from the helpful maths guides you upload, and you and your students can see the work of other teachers across the country. You will now be able to search for 10ticks guides AND user-made videos in our Online Help area!
So, do you think you can do better than this? Watch Ian Fisher’s video and see if you can upload something better! Each month we will announce our video of the month on the website! Simply go to www.10ticks.co.uk and click the ‘Teacher’ tab before logging in. You will then see a tab on the left hand side of the page to upload your video!

Changes in the Academy programme.
|
The new Secretary of State for Education, Michael Gove, has announced plans outlined in the Queen’s Speech to allow more schools to benefit from Academy freedoms. The new programme will be open to primary, secondary and special schools. Changes will be seen as early as September 2010, particularly for those schools automatically qualifying under an outstanding rating from Ofsted.
Many schools will be attaining Academy status over the next several months and we’d like to take this opportunity to firstly congratulate you, but also to inform you of changes to your current use of 10ticks materials.
School attaining Academy status will be change as legal entities under a different name. In terms of your 10ticks User License, your rights to use 10ticks materials will be void. If you have bought 10ticks materials for your schools, the materials will be licensed in this way.
If this is the case for your school, please contact us to discuss your current package and to renew the license under your Academy name.

The Licences Explained
|
Teacher License – For use only by the teacher named on the worksheet.
School License – For use by any teacher in the named schools as photocopies. Can also be put on a secure intranet for viewing on computers or whiteboards within the named school.
VLE License – Can be put on the school VLE so pupils can access 10ticks worksheets from home. Worksheets are split into 1-page PDF’s ready to be uploaded to your VLE. The pages are not editable.

Can a Giraffe Swim?
|
It has previously been thought that unlike most large animals, giraffes can’t swim or wade through water. Scientists have now created a digital giraffe using numerous calculations on weight, mass, size, shape, lung capacity and centre of gravity. With the help of maths formulas to determine rotation dynamics, flotation dynamics and surface areas, a digital giraffe has been made to test out the theory in ‘digital’ water.
The formulas used by experts suggest that a giraffe would become buoyant in 2.8 metres of water, and they can wade across water that is shallower than this. Although it has been found that though giraffes become buoyant, their ample necks and long legs can create stability issues. It can be assumed that giraffes are very poor swimmers.
So there you have it, giraffes can swim! And there really are no limits to the applications of maths!
