   Troubleshooting

If you have a problem, the easiest solution is to try it on another computer or printer set up. If you don't have access to another, we have trawled the internet to find as many possible ways to solve printing issues for you.

   Simple Troubleshooting

Q. When you click on the download it asks which program you want to open it.
A. You don't have Acrobat Reader installed on your computer. Install Acrobat Reader.
Q. There is a rectangular black blob on the print out.
A. This is clip art. The blob should be a picture. You are using an old version of Acrobat Reader (pre version 4.0). Install the latest version of Acrobat Reader and print again.
Q. Some line measurements appear smaller than they should.
A. In your print dialogue box deselect (so there is no tick) the fit to page option.
Q. When I open the document lots of small squares appear on the page.
A. You have opened the document in 'Microsoft Word'. A menu will have appeared asking you which application you want to open the document with. This shows that Acrobat Reader is not installed on your computer. Install the latest version of Acrobat Reader.

   More Difficult Troubleshooting

Q. a). I can't see the footer with the level descriptions.
b). When printing some forms in PDF formats, all the words run together with no spaces between them. However, everything looks fine on the screen.

A. These issues can nearly always be resolved by obtaining and installing the most recent printer driver available for your particular make and model printer. Most printer manufacturers provide free printer driver updates from their own web sites. Alternatively you may need to alter your printer/printer driver settings, see your manual for details.
Q. Are there any known issues when printing PDF forms with specific printers?
A. Canon BJC 4100 - PDF files may not print properly in the printer's photographic mode. Use the printer's Graphics & Text or Automatic modes instead.

Canon LBP-81V
- Use the printer's bitmap mode for best results.

HP DeskJet Printers - If provided, it is recommended to use the printer's Raster Graphics mode as opposed to the Vector Graphics mode.

HP DeskJet 500C - This printer has an unprintable area near the top of the page. Be sure to use the shrink-to-fit option in Acrobat Reader's Print dialog box.

HP LaserJet Printers - For best results it is recommended that you use the printer driver's True Type font option to download True Type fonts as bitmaps (not outlines).

HP LaserJet 5M - For best results, it is recommended that you use the standard HP Laserjet 5M printer driver and not the enhanced driver that ships with the printer.

Q. Do you have any other general troubleshooting advice for resolving print problems?
A. Raster vs. Vector Modes - You may get more consistent results if your printer driver is set to use Raster mode for graphics. Note: not all printer drivers have this mode.

Dithering - Set your printer driver's Graphics/Dithering option to Fine or Coarse for best results when printing halftone images. A setting of None will produce poor results.

600dpi - If you experience problems printing to HP LaserJet printers in the 600dpi mode, try switching back to 300dpi mode or if it is equipped with a PostScript option, use the PostScript Level 1 or 2 printer. It may be because the printer has insufficient memory available. Below are two potential solutions to this problem:

In the Acrobat Reader General Preferences dialog (select fromthe File>Preferences menu) you may choose to use Serif only or Sans only forfont substitution. This frees up additional memory in the printer and chancesare good your document will print successfully.

Upgrade the printer's memory.

Q. Printing produces an incomplete printout with many documents -- pages are missing, or split into partial pages.
A. Acrobat Reader version 4.x frequently chokes when trying to print files larger than about half a megabyte.

a).  After clicking Print in Acrobat Reader, go to Print Range, and print only pages 1-2, 3-4, etc., until you've printed the entire document.

b). Upgrade to Acrobat Reader 5. You can get Acrobat Reader version 5 from the library's Acrobat Download Page - the "Acrobat Reader for Windows 95 and Windows 2000" links are version 5.
Note that after installing Acrobat Reader 5, you should do the following to eliminate a potential problem that version 5 sometimes has with Internet Explorer:

Start Acrobat Reader separately from Internet Explorer (if there's not an icon for it on your desktop, go to Start/Programs, and look for "Adobe Acrobat").

In Acrobat, click Edit/Preferences/Options. Uncheck the button near the top of the screen that says "Display PDF in Browser". Close Acrobat.
Now click on a link to one of the PDF files you were trying to open earlier. You should get a dialog box asking what you want to do with the file. Click "Open File From this Location", and uncheck the box labelled "Always ask before opening files of this type". Then click OK. Acrobat Reader will open a new window, and should display the document. Acrobat should work from now on -- you won't have to keep repeating these steps.

Q. My printer is printing only 1/2 of the page with a canon Bubble Jet printer.
A. Because some PCs currently on the market (e.g. Compaq PCs) are not set for a mode that is compatible with some of Canon's Bubble Jet printers, owners may be experiencing printing problems such as the printer only printing 1/2 or 3/4 pages. Here are four possible solutions to this problem. If these do not correct your problem contact Canon Technical Support for assistance.

a). Printer Port Set to ECP in Device Manager
  1. On your Windows 95/98 desktop, right-click the My Computer icon and click Properties.
  2. Click the Device Manager tab.
  3. Double-click Ports (COM & LPT).
  4. Double-click ECP Printer port (LPT1). If your configuration is already Printer Port, this correction does not apply.
  5. Click the Driver tab.
  6. Click Change Driver.
  7. Click Show all devices.
  8. Under Models: Select Printer port, then click OK.
  9. Click OK again.
  10. Shut down Windows 95/98 and reboot.
b).      Port Resource Settings Incorrect (e.g. Compaq PC's)
  1. On your Windows 95/98 desktop, right-click the My Computer icon and click Properties.
  2. Select the Device Manager tab.
  3. Double-click Ports (COM & LPT).
  4. Double-click LPT.
  5. Select the Resources tab.
  6. Deselect Automatic Settings.
  7. Change Basic Configuration, find the configuration that meets the following conditions:
    * Input/Output Range 0378-037
    * Input/Output Range 0778-077
    * Interrupt Request 07
    * NO DMA.
  8. Select OK.
  9. Shut down Windows 95/98 and Reboot.
c). [K is printed at top of the page and the rest of the page is correct.
  1. On your Windows 95/98 desktop, right-click the My Computer icon and click Properties.
  2. Click the Device Manager tab.
  3. Double-click Ports (COM & LPT).
  4. Double-click LPT.
  5. Select the Driver tab.
  6. Look at the File Revision line, LPT.VXD v4.00.950.
You will need to replace LPT.VXD v4.00.950 with LPT.VXD v4.00.503. The LPT.VXD file is located in the Windows\System directory.
  7. Confirm that your CMOS (BIOS) settings are set to Standard Bi-directional
[Note: CMOS configurations can vary from model to model. Please check your owner's manual or contact your computer manufacturer for details.]
d). Incorrect Port Configuration on Toshiba Laptops to change the CMOS setting: 1. From the Start menu, point to Programs, then click Toshiba Utilities.

  1. Select Hardware Options.
  2. Select Parallel/Printer.
  3. Select Standard Bi-directional.
  4. Click OK.
  5. The machine will ask if you want to reboot. Select Yes.
  6. Reboot your system.

Q. Printing a partial or blank page with a Compaq Presario computer.
Models Affected: Presario 3000, 4000, 5000, 6000, 7000, 8000, and 9000 series

A. Troubleshooting with Computers Using Win '95:
1. Is the printer cable an IEEE 1284 bi-directional printer cable? (You can check the writing on the cable.) If you do not have this cable, replace your current cable with an IEEE 1284 cable.
2.If you have the correct cable, change the printer port from ECP printer port to Standard printer port. To do this follow steps A1-A8.

SECTION A.
A1) From the Windows 95 desktop, use your right mouse button and click once on the My Computer icon. A menu will appear, then click with your left mouse button on properties.
A2) Click on the Device Manager tab, and then double click on Ports (COM&LPT).
A3) Double click on ECP port, then on the driver tab, click change driver. Click on the option for Show All Device Options.
A4) In the Manufacturers box, click Standard Port Types. In the Models box, click Printer Port, and then click OK
A5) Click OK
A6) Obtain a copy of the LPT.VXD driver from the Compaq Web Site (http//www.compaq.com). The file is listed as SP2345. If you have the Windows 95 CD, you can obtain the file from the X:\Drivers\Printer\LPT directory (where X is the letter of the CD-ROM drive). If you have the Windows 95 CD, follow steps B1-B6
A7) Once you have downloaded the file, copy it to your C:\Windows\System. You can do this in Windows Explorer by clicking on the file with the left mouse button and holding it down, and dragging it on to the C:\Windows\System folder, and releasing the mouse button. To get to Windows Explorer, click Start, Programs, Windows Explorer.
A8) Reboot the computer and test print. If the problem still persists follow steps C1-C7.

SECTION B.
B1) Put the Windows 95 CD or Companion CD in your CD-ROM drive.
B2) Click on Start, Programs, Windows Explorer.
B3) Click on your D or E drive.
B4) On the left side of the window, you will see the folders, (or directories), on the CD-ROM. On the right side, you will see the folders and files of the folder selected on the left side.
B5) On the left side double click on the folder labeled Drivers. Other folders will appear below. Then double click on Printer. Again, more folders will appear. Then click on LPT. On the right you will see the files in that directory. Find the one labelled LPT.VXD and click once with your right-mouse button. A menu will appear, select COPY. On the left side, double click on the Windows folder on your C:\ drive. Once the folders have appeared below the Windows Folder, click once with your right mouse button on the folder labelled System, when the menu appears, select Paste. This has just copied the new driver onto your hard drive.
B6) Reboot the computer and test print. If the problem still persists, follow steps C1-C7.

SECTION C.
C1) Click on Start, Settings, Control Panel.
C2) Double click on SYSTEM, and then click on the Device Manager tab. Double click on Ports (COM&LPT), double click on LPT port. When the next window comes up, click on the Driver tab, and click on change driver.
C3) Click on the option for Show All Device Options.
C4) In the Manufacturers box, click on Compaq (NOTE: On some units, this will not be an option. Choose
STANDARD PORT TYPES. On the right side select ECP Port, then click OK
C5) Once it has changed back to ECP Port, double click on ECP Port in Device Manager. Click on the Resources tab.
C6) Uncheck the USE AUTOMATIC SETTINGS box, and click on the down arrow next to BASIC CONFIGURATION 0000 just above the USE AUTOMATIC SETTINGS BOX. Select a configuration that assigns the correct IRQ and address to the port, but does not list a DMA. (For most products, Select 0003 which assigns IRQ7, 378-37f, 778-77a to the port but no DMA.
C7) Save the changes, reboot the computer, and test print.

Q. A particular page in a particular document won't print at all, or prints as one or more partial pages.
A. This may happen if the page contains graphics, and you are printing to a laser printer that has less than 8 meg of memory. Laser printers (unlike inkjets) have to be able to hold the entire page in memory for it to print correctly.
If you can borrow another printer (ideally an inkjet), and printing to that printer does work, than you may need to upgrade the memory in your laser printer, or get a new printer.
Q. Where else can I go for support ?
