Put s-pi-ce in your life

Did you know that the 14th March is Pi Day? The number itself 3.14159..gives clues
as to the date of the celebration. 3 is the third month - March. 14 is the 14th
of the month and celebrations start at 1.59 - presumably the afternoon!
Madhava, a 15th century Indian matematician, came up with an exact formula for pi
using fractions. Start with 4, subtract four thirds, add four fifths, subtract four
sevenths, add four ninths, subtract four elevenths.... repeat this infinitely and
you get precisely pi.
From the Times Newspaper 11/03/09. A duck sits in the middle of a perfectly circular
pond, of radius 40 metres. On the edge is a hungry fox which cannot swim. The fox
can run four times faster than the duck can swim. Will the fox always be able to
catch the duck the moment it reaches the shore?
Answer below.

The duck will make it if it swims just short of 10m from the centre of the pond,
and then swims in a circle about the centre of the pond. As its circumference is
just less than a quarter of the circumference of the pond, the duck can swim round
its circle faster than the fox runs around the edge. The duck keeps swimming until
the fox is diametrically opposite it, before heading to shore. It covers just over
30m, the fox must run pi x 40m approximatley 125 m, but it can only cover 120m.
The duck makes it - just. I should just fly though.
