 Pilot Schools

Thank you to all the teachers that replied to our request for Pilot schools last term. The pilot of our new online learning system is on the way and has had excellent feedback so far. We are very excited by this and even have a few South African schools taking part via our South African Website, www.10ticks.co.za. We have just finished phase 2 of the learning system, adding in more functionality, a Merit system and reporting to parents. We are following whether this system can help lower low-level disruption in the classroom thorugh parent/teacher partnerships.

We are looking to extend the pilot and therefore there is room for some more schools. The system enables you to put students on a course from Level 1 - A* GCSE and let them work at their own pace as independent learning. Alternatively you can just give classes individual worksheets or tests for homework. You can even use your own resources. It is a very comprehensive and flexible system.

We are looking for the whole department to get involved. Email i.fisher@10ticks.co.uk if you would like to participate (FREE). Limited places available.

 South Africa

10ticks Director Ian Fisher recently visited Johannesburg, South Africa, to launch 15 10ticks workbooks. In partnership with Heinemann (South Africa), 10ticks has just launched the full range of workbooks from Grade 1 to Grade 12, along with Grade 10 - 12 Maths Literacy workbooks.

The South African Curriculum is Grade (age) based with pupils following the curriculum relevant to their age, regardless of ability. When pupils reach Grade 10 they can follow the more academic Mathematics course or the less challenging Maths Literacy course.

The Mathematics course is academically rigorous. The harder topics would be taught in the 2nd year of the UK A level.

The Book launch was at Bhukulone Secondary School in Soweto. Free books were given out to all the students there. Visit 10ticks.co.za to see the pictures.
 Boys are better than Girls

Boys finally moved ahead of girls in GCSE for the first time since Labour came to power, after course-work was abolished. Any coincidence?

Which is the fairer form of assessment, examination or coursework? It was 1997 the last time boys out performed the girls. Mike Cresswell, Head of AQA states that it is well established that girls outperform boys at coursework. So is this a forwards or backwards step? Are we disadvantaging girls to benefit the boys?

In our opinion it was time to alleviate maths teachers of the added pressure of coursework assessment. Not only did this add to the teaching load, it put relationships under strain with pupils with low attendence, making a difficult job harder. There will never be an ideal system of testing. Do we hot-house children for tests or give them a passion for the subject? Do we test memory or application, do we use norm-based testing or criteria based testing? There are so many different options.

If we look to the Pacific Rim where children excel at maths in International League tables we see children returning from cramming classes at 10 oclock at night. Is that the future if we are to challenge for mathematical dominance in the world? Some times mid-table mediocrity may be the correct way forward.

Level 1 and 2 worksheets available

Our new Level 1 (407 pages) and Level 2 (460 pages) worksheets are written for a variety of teaching styles. Included are additional Year 1 (303 pages) and Year 2 (240 pages) worksheets referenced to the Primary Framework as set out on the National Strategies Website. This is an opportunity for Primary Schools to enjoy the materials that so many Secondary Schools already use successfully.

In a survey of Heads of Maths, 99% would recommend the worksheets to a colleague in another school. 82% said the use of the worksheets had contributed to an increase in the standard of teaching in their schools.

Over 1.5 million pupils (45%) of UK Secondary Schools are using 10ticks maths worksheets.
